Quality Over Quantity

Would you believe me if I told you your follower count really isn’t as big of a deal as you think it is? You might be thinking...hold up, isn’t that the whole point of social media? The visibility?

Girl, I have news for you! There is a HUGE difference between high follower counts and high visibility. Let’s talk about the little details -

If you’re a photographer in NJ, you might have 20,000 followers...you’ve got the sought after ‘k’ next to a double digit, and you’re feeling on fire. But you haven’t gotten a lead in months, and it just makes no sense to you because you are practically an influencer! The thing is, those followers are not potential clients. They’re as good as a like, and likes won’t put money in the bank. Maybe you have a couple thousand followers, all local to your business, all potential clients who engage with you. You might get only 50 likes per photo, but those 50 people are all potential clients who are clicking that little email link to ask you about your prices. You might be jealous of the person with the small city of followers, but you’re the one making a profit!

As business owners, we need to focus a little more on quality over quantity. In the end, a follower count means nothing if those people aren’t (a.) your ideal clients and (b.) engaging with you. So how can we target our posts towards the people who matter?

Decide who your ideal client is. Do you design awesome t-shirts for moms and their babes? You should be gearing your posts towards those mommy bloggers! Don’t use teens to model your product, and don’t write captions about a night at the club. Create content your ideal client will relate to and enjoy

Use the right hashtags. If your focus is in selling your all natural skincare line, there’s no reason to tag your posts with #tbt. Choose specialized, targeting hashtags that won’t get lost in a sea of posts and will draw in the right kind of followers. Try something like #loveyourskin or #cleanbeauty

Engage with the right people. Don’t scroll down that likeforlike tag, double tapping your way into carpal tunnel. Those people will not help your business and will not give you the right visibility! Engage with people who post the same kind of content you do - they’re the ones who will turn around and follow you, and continue to engage in a positive way.

It’s so easy to get into that mindset of low followers = low success, but remember when social media wasn’t even a thing?! As long as you get the word out to the right people who will love and support your brand, you’re all good to go.
